Very true. And the good news is that authors have more viable options than ever before when it comes to publishing their work, whether it be by self-publishing or legacy publishing.

I’m a published author and this is a remarkably accurate account of my experience – except that the advances were a lot smaller (the effect of the global financial crisis). It’s tough out there but if you really love to write, you’ll write!

Amanda Hocking is really the poster-child for this. She sold her Trylle series for, I believe, 7 figures to St. Martin’s (not positive on the amount). Of course, it’s fairly rare for that kind of thing to happen, and I think it’s more likely to happen in a situation where ebook sales are robust but print sales are low or non-existent, so there’s still a large market to tap.

Do you know if there are authors who start out independent then sell the same work to a legacy publisher?

This information is most concerning indeed. I am taken back by the unrasonable expectation that the author should sit on their hands for upwards of 2-years and not be able to publish anything for a significant period of time.
